Lovingly thrown together by myself and some rather excellent friends; Super Friendship Arcade is an experimental video games party like no other! Picture a party at a club, but instead of music and dancing; weird controllers and video games! We aim to harness the power of weird and wonderful interactive experiences in order to bring people together and throw an amazing party along the way. Before each event we try and organise jams to build new controllers and games. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, don’t hesitate to get involved!
MGSA is home-base of game development in South Africa. Not only is it the official industry association, but it’s also the place where we all hang out and talk about game development. If you want to meet local developers or get involved in the local industry, the MGSA forums are your best bet. MGSA also organises various events around the country. Most notably, monthly meetups in Cape Town and Johannesburg. These meetups are completely free and everyone is welcome. In fact, we’d love to meet you! We’re friendly people!
Diversity is a huge problem in the games industry, and we’d like to fix that. The Amber Key is wonderful initiative to get more women involved in game development. We’re talking about free game development workshops that are by women and for women. In fact, men aren’t allowed to intend at all. This is a space for women to learn, teach, and create together. If you’re interested and don’t identify as male, check out the Facebook group to keep up with Amber Key events. The world needs to hear new voices!
Amaze festival is an incredible event that happens once a year in Berlin, and now Johannesburg. Amaze is a week-long celebration of games and playful media that continues to blow minds each year. The schedule is always overflowing with incredible exhibitions, talks, workshops and parties. It’s also a great way to get a taste of the international games scenes as excellent and interesting developers and creatives pour in from around the world. There is so much to learn and so much to experience at Amaze. I wouldn’t miss it for the world!
